Using Your FSA or HSA for Personal Training
If you're looking to use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover your personal training through Physique Academy, you may need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). This document is often required by your health plan or FSA/HSA provider to show that personal training is part of a medically necessary treatment plan.
What is an LMN?
An LMN is a statement from a licensed healthcare provider that confirms personal training is necessary to treat, manage, or prevent a specific health condition. This allows your FSA or HSA funds to be used for training expenses.
What should the LMN include?
- Your full name
- Your diagnosis or medical condition
- The recommended treatment (personal training)
- A statement explaining why personal training is medically necessary
- The provider's name, credentials, and signature
- The date of issuance
Who can write an LMN?
Typically, your primary care physician or a specialist managing your condition can write the LMN.
How to get started:
- Consult with your doctor: Talk to them about your current condition and how personal training could support your treatment or prevention plan.
- Request the LMN: If your provider agrees, ask them to write and sign the letter.
- Submit the LMN: Send it to your FSA/HSA provider along with any required documentation.
A Note About TrueCoach and TrueMed:
Our client platform, TrueCoach, has partnered with TrueMed to make this process easier—but you can also still go directly through your own primary care physician to get the LMN. What matters most is ensuring the letter meets the specific requirements of your health plan or FSA/HSA provider, so we always recommend checking with them first to avoid any surprises.
Using TrueMed For Your LMN
You can use TrueMed, a trusted third-party teledoc provider that partners with our coaching app to help clients go through this process easily.
How to Get Started with TrueMed:
- Complete a short health intake form on TrueMed's secure site: truemed.com/truecoach
- Meet with a licensed healthcare provider (usually via a quick telehealth consult).
- If approved, you'll receive a Letter of Medical Necessity which you can submit to your FSA/HSA provider for reimbursement.
Common Questions:
Q: Will everyone get approved through TrueMed?
A: Not necessarily—TrueMed's physicians will make an independent decision based on your health status and goals. Approval is not guaranteed.
Q: Does TrueMed guarantee reimbursement?
A: No. TrueMed provides the documentation, but your FSA/HSA provider makes the final decision on reimbursement.
Q: Do I need to pay out of pocket first?
A: Yes. Most FSA/HSA providers require payment upfront, and you submit a reimbursement request afterward with the required documentation.
Q: How long does the process take?
A: Many users complete it in 10–15 minutes, with the letter sent within 24–48 hours if approved.
